Queen Elizabeth
The virgin Queen By Marcus Geeraerts the younger
oil on canvas c.1592
In this portrait she stands on the gold with her feet pointing at Oxfordshire, the country of the courtier Sir Henry Lee who commissioned the painting.
Seeing these portraits in person was much more inspiring than seeing them as digital images or in books, I could see the paint cracking and could image the strong colours they were before they had faded. The very elaborate portraits of Elizabeth made me think of sitting or standing very still while the artist drew and painted a portal of me, the amount of time and effort that went into the portraits is impressive. Compared to today where technology is ready available and a picture can be taken in seconds, the time and effort has disappeared. Her image was so powerful and had to be perfect in her eyes, no portrait of her that she didn't like was available to see, many were destroyed over the years because of her pride and her knowledge that her image is everything, most people would never see the Queen in person, so her portraits were a huge part of her image and her power over the people, her inspiration for fashion and makeup was portrayed though her paintings.
