contouring the face

Contouring the face

Products I have used:
  • Illamasqua satin primer
  • Kryolan light foundation, foundation brush
  • Illamasqua translucent powder, powder puff
  • Kryolan highlighter powder, blending brush, large brush
  • Kryolan dark powder from blusher kit, blending and large brush

These images show the subtle contouring completed during my practical lesson. After prepping the skin and applying my foundation base, I then used cream colouring to contour the face lightly, ready for the camera. I then used a soft blusher powder over the top to bring some colour and life to the face. I would normally add stronger colours to made more defined lines but this way the lines are subtle and fully blended to achieve a natural look.

I added the colour to the cheeks, over the forehead, the jaw line, lightly either side of the nose and under the chin. I liked doing this practical, it gave me another way to create the contour look without only using powders. I used my fingers as well as a brush to get this look, this means I was able to feel the cheek bones and apply the product in the correct place. I used a highlighter on the cheek bone and on the forehead and chin, I then used a darker colour to shade underneath the chin, in the cheek bone and either side of the nose. I liked the finish look, next time I will use more highlighter on the cheeks and forehead to achieve a bright and fresh look to the face. I will also use more cream on the forehead and nose. It was difficult to shape the face, because I haven't come completely aware of all the different face shapes; doing this technique is easier on myself as I am very familiar with my face shape and the colours that suit me. It will be interesting next time to practice with someone with a different face shape to see the outcome; where the cheek bones sit and the size of the forehead and nose, practicing on different faces will help me in the future because I will be familiar with the different types of faces, the shapes and skin types.

Health and safety:

Before I started the application of makeup,I ensured all my brushes were clean and there was no cross contamination in the products. Throughout the application I ensured I didn't cross contaminate the brushes or products by 'double dipping.' I assessed the clients skin and came to the conclusion she had normal skin with no contraindications.
